Innovative features on Disney Cruise Line’s new ship

Hi Cruise Nation fans! I was scouring the internet for all the latest in cruise news this afternoon and came across something that made pretty excited.

The newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, the Disney Dream, setting sail in January 2011 is going to include loads of innovative rides, designs and experiences making the Disney Cruise Line experience even better than before.

And the ship will feature a cruise industry first dubbed the AquaDuck. It’s a high-speed flume ride on the upper decks of the ship that stretches 765 ft in length and features twists, turns, drops, uphill acceleration and river rapids. And wait for it… guests will slide 13 ft over the side of the ship in a translucent swing-out loop allowing you to look down onto the sea below!

So I know this is technically for kids, but this sounds amazing! The new ship will also have virtual portholes in all inside staterooms providing a real-time view of what’s going on outside in high-definition.

Get booking now…

Pals Use Social Media to Bag a Cruise

The Carnival Spirit by http://www.flickr.com/photos/stinkytofu/ on Flickr

It started with a text about a road trip… and turned into an exploration of North America using the power of social media to direct Alex and Luke on the journey of a lifetime.

Leaving behind their lives in Canada, and without a route or any idea of what they’d get up to, Alex and Luke called upon the communities behind the most popular social media sites to act as their compass and their guidebook.

But it gets more interesting, cruise fans. When the twosome found themselves in Seattle, a perfect starting point for travelling to Hawaii or Alaska, they took to the web to ask which way they should go. Incredibly, Carnival Cruises got wind of their Diceman-like dilemma and offered them an Alaskan cruise aboard the Carnival Spirit!

Take a look at their experience aboard the ship:

So what’s included in my cruise?

New to cruising? Check out our guide

As you know, cruising has become more and more affordable over the years without compromising on quality. But did you know that if you were to compare a land based holiday of a similar standard to the cruise lines you could be saving as much as 25%?

Remember, there is so much more included all in the price of a cruise than what you get in a land based holiday. Just imagine paying for flights to see all the destinations in one holiday!

So what’s included?

Accommodation
All cabins come with twin beds that can be converted to a queen size bed; cabins are compact but are comfortable and many can take a third or fourth person. All cabins will have an en-suite bathroom with shower or a bathtub.

Meals
Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are included in the main restaurants and buffets. There are also special dining events like afternoon tea and midnight buffets included in your price. However some cruise lines now have alternative dining in more intimate restaurants which normally come with a cover charge, so we recommended you book these restaurants at the start of the cruise as they fill up fast.

Entertainment
Shows, comedians, nightclubs and all evening entertainment are included as well as most of the facilities such as the pool, sauna, hot-tubs, fitness rooms, tennis and basketball courts. Some facilities, such as the spa facilities incur a fee.

The Cruise Price
The Cruise price you see you see is not always the total amount that you will pay, there are some factors that will adjust the prices accordingly. These may be as follows:

Cabin occupancy: Cruise prices advertised are per person and based on two people sharing the cabin. If you are travelling as a solo passenger you may still be expected to full pay the price as if the cabin was occupied by two people. If there is a third person or fourth person in the cabin, then the average price falls per person as there are reductions offered for the 3rd and 4th passengers that occupy a cabin.

Taxes / fees: This amount is usually no more than 5%, but may not be included in the advertised price, although will be included in the final costing before booking.

Fuel surcharge: Many cruise lines are now charging an additional £5 to £9 per person, per day to cover the increased cost of fuel.

What’s not included?

Tipping / Gratuities: In general, budget in £5-£7 per person, per day for gratuities for your waiters, cabin stewards, etc. You won’t need to leave this on the dinner table each night; it’s usually handled on the last night of the cruise. Indeed, many cruises now automate the process so you don’t have to worry about bringing large amounts of cash onboard.

Bar drinks: Alcohol, soft drinks and specialty coffees (lattes, frappes, etc.) are not included. Prices are comparable to those on land.

Excursions: You can always get off at the ports and look around on your own. However, many people like to join organised excursions for tours or outdoor activities like snorkelling or parasailing. These can be booked through the cruise line or through third-party vendors.

The Spa / Beauty Salon: You can have a massage, haircut, or personal training session onboard, and prices are similar to high-end spas in large cities.

Exceptions…

The above information is based on major cruises, so check before you travel. Bon voyage!

Celebrity wine expert Olly Smith brews up Autumn cocktails

Wine Expert Olly Smith. Photograph by Steve Dunlop

Ahead of Olly Smith’s arrival on the Azura on September 21-24, the celebrity wine expert has created four new cocktails to try this Autumn. The wine connoisseur, who oversees The Glass House on Britain’s newest and largest cruise ship, said he has combined old favourites with new flavours for a taste of Autumn: “On a dark, chilly night there is nothing better than gently brewing spices and spirits,” he said.  ”They fill the house with the aroma of comfort and a sense of festivity. Autumn evokes magical smells of crackling fires and glorious tastes like ginger parkin and of course, it’s mulled wine heaven.”

“My recipes here are for old favourites with a twist and new ones which will soon become legendary,” he adds.

My kids love this – serves two…

Dragon’s Blood!

10 ml Cassis
10 ml Grenadine
200 ml fizzy water
Garnish with a slice of blood orange.

For the full effect, make matching Dragon’s Blood ice cubes (use the above recipe but replace fizzy water for still, pour into an ice-cube tray and freeze as normal). You can always customize it into a more grown up cocktail by adding a tot of blackcurrant vodka or sloe gin!

Mulled Wine

This is a simple drink to create – and you can easily customize your own version. The key is not to boil the wine, just keep it warm. You can add orange juice, brandy and sugar to the base, a clove or two, a knob of fresh ginger, a cinnamon stick and you can load it with oranges, lemons and limes or try using slices of fresh mango for a tropical twist. The rule of thumb is keep tasting until it’s right – and don’t over do the cloves or they make it bitter!

Mulled White Wine

This couldn’t be simpler, choose a fruity leftover white wine, add freshly chopped pineapple, a few lemon wedges, honey and a cinnamon stick. Strain and serve with a sliced lemon garnish and sugar to taste (and you can give it a kick with a dose of leftover spirit – brandy, vodka, or Cointreau for an orangey tang).

Olly’s Secret Punch

Gently heat equal measures of leftover port, Cointreau and Southern Comfort topped up with fresh orange juice in a pan. Don’t let it boil. At the last-minute squeeze two halves of blood orange into the pan and toss in the squeezed halves. I prefer not to add sugar as the port makes my secret punch gloriously sweet. Garnish with an orange slice and serve in glass mugs.

Olly Smith will be travelling on Azura regularly throughout 2010 and 2011.
